6 Reasons Why You Can’t Lose Weight, And What To Do About It

run

With my experience as a family doctor I know that most people can’t lose weight because they are not working in harmony with their body and mind. For example, going on a restrictive diet is not in harmony with your physiology, and 9 times out of 10 it leads to insignificant weight loss or weight gain further down the road. By eliminating these 6 mistakes you’ll have a much better chance of succeeding with your weight loss.

You Didn’t Set a Clear Goal

goal

If you don’t make a decision about exactly where you’re going, how are you going to get there? Imagine attempting to go on vacation without knowing the destination, because you haven’t given it thought and come to a decision. When patients come to me for help because they can’t lose weight, my first question is “What do you want?” They often say something like “To be thinner“. This is really vague and it’s like saying you want to go somewhere hot and sunny for your vacation. There’s no clear destination! Your mind needs a definite goal to lock on to. Otherwise you have no focus, no reason to start taking action, or to continue taking it if you manage to make a start in the first place. A definite goal could be something like “I fit into my favourite jeans again and love the way I look!” This is a clear destination.

You Didn’t Create a Roadmap

road map

Some people get the first bit right, and have a clear goal. But they still can’t lose weight. The next common mistake is not making a plan to get from where you are now, to where you want to go. Most people’s plan is ‘go on a diet and exercise more‘. Did that work last time? Why do you think it will work this time? Think of all the steps you take to make it to your vacation. There are more than 2 aren’t there? You need to create a step by step plan to follow to successfully lose weight. You might want to include the next 4 things in your plan. But you need to make this your plan, and you need to give yourself some time to work it out.

You Didn’t Identify Your Emotional Eating

can't lose weight

Hands up if you ever eat when you’re not hungry. If your hand isn’t up I don’t think I believe you! You can’t lose weight when you regularly eat if you’re not hungry. These days food is constantly available, and as a result eating to satisfy genuine physical hunger isn’t the only reason people eat. People eat for many other reasons including boredom, stress, and unhappiness. All food eaten when your body doesn’t need it is destined for your fat stores. You need to know this is going on and make a plan of how to overcome this. This may be something you need to learn more about. A friend of mind put on loads of weight when he started working from home. When he needed a break he realized he was going to the fridge and eating. At work he used to have a quick chat with colleagues. This is eating due to boredom. His solution was to go out for a quick walk with his dog when he needed a short break from work.

You Didn’t Hydrate Yourself

glass of water

This is perhaps the easiest thing you can do to improve your health and speed up your weight loss, but are you drinking eight glasses of water each day? There are two reasons keeping yourself properly hydrated helps you lose weight. Imagine a plant that hasn’t had enough water, it is wilting. This is you if you’re not hydrated. Now imagine that same plant standing strong because it’s had enough water. When you’re hydrated you have more energy. When you have more energy you move around more. And you can work out the rest! Not everyone realizes that early hunger and thirst feel the same – it can feel like you’re hungry for food. If you don’t realize this, and you haven’t been hydrating yourself adequately, you’ll end up eating more than you need, with obvious consequences. Keep hydrated, and then the hunger you feel is for food and not water.

You Didn’t Avoid Foods That Increase Your Appetite

white bread

Refined carbs, like white rice, sugar, fries and things made out of white flour increase your blood sugar dramatically, and very fast. High blood sugar is harmful to your body, so your body’s response is robust – it produces a load of insulin which brings your blood sugar back down quickly. The result is a rebound low blood sugar. This has you feeling really hungry, often only a short time after you’ve eaten. This drives you to eat more, even though you may have already eaten more calories than you need. Cut right down on refined and processed food, because people who eat a lot of this can’t lose weight. Eat whole foods instead.

You Didn’t Kick Start Your Fat Burning Enzymes

sprint

When people think exercise they often think about going out for a jog, or doing extended cardio workouts in the gym. This type of workout burns fat. But hang on a minute. If your body needs fat for this kind of exercise isn’t it going to make more available for the next time you do it? You body is highly adaptable. If you start doing something that needs fat, your body will make it available. This is why some people can’t lose weight even though they do a lot of cardio workouts, or they pile on a load of weight if they stop. When you do short bursts of high intensity exercise, e.g. like sprinting for 20 seconds 6 times with rest of 60 seconds in between, you don’t burn a lot of fat while you’re doing it. You burn glucose. However, you do burn fat for up to 24 hours after this kind of exercise, and you don’t encourage your body to lay down fat. If you’re exercising for the purpose of weight loss ditch the prolonged cardio workouts and switch to interval training.

This Is How Steve Jobs Started and Changed the World

Steve_Jobs_Headshot

For years, Steve Jobs had a larger-than-life impact on the world of technology, design, music and other fields. Unlike some modern technology entrepreneurs, Steve Jobs took an unusual path to business success. Let’s consider some of the highlights of his story. For a more in-depth introduction to Jobs, I highly recommend reading “Steve Jobs” by Walter Isaacson. I am currently reading the book and have found it highly engaging (it is also my main source for this article).

Before Apple

In some ways, Jobs started in the right place and time to take best advantage of the digital revolution. Following his adoption by Paul Jobs and Clara Jobs, Steve Jobs grew up in Mountain View. In addition to gaining an appreciation of craftsmanship from his father, Jobs had countless experiences with HP engineers and others who resided in California at that time.

Jobs had an open mind about new ideas and a willingness to bring ideas together in unusual ways. At times, his experimental outlook frustrated those around him (e.g. his ever-changing and usually very strict diets). However, this approach also shaped his view of products. During his studies at Reed College and beyond, Jobs learned about calligraphy, Eastern religion, design and many other topics. Even though Jobs dropped out of college, he continued seeking out teachers (e.g. his 1974 trip to India) and mentors to help him grow his skills.

During the 1970s, Jobs was one of many people in California interested in designing new technology. While his Jobs’s partner and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak had expertise in engineering, Jobs understood the importance of building a consumer-friendly product. According to Walter Isaacson’s biography, Jobs was keen to build an integrated computer. This consumer-use focus continues to set Apple products apart from other products (e.g. the 1975 Altair device which Isaacson describes as: “just a $495 pile of parts that had to be soldered to a board that would then do little”, pg 59)

The Early Apple Years

Following some early success with building and selling electronics (e.g. the Blue Box  which made it possible to make free phone calls), Jobs and Wozniak began building computers. In 1975, Jobs presented the first computer to a group of technology hobbyists. It did not go well. As Isaacson puts it: “The audience was not very impressed. The Apple had a cut-rate microprocessor,” (pg 66) when Jobs presented an early computer to the Homebrew Computer Club. That early experience may be one of the reasons that Jobs became skeptical about market research and surveying potential customers.

Fortunately for us, Jobs was determined to sell his product and soon found customers. By the early 1980s, Apple Computer was a growing company. The Apple II computer was starting to sell well. During the 1980s, Jobs’s record was mixed. On the one hand, he was known for his outstanding dedication to product quality and often demanded improvements. Unfortunately, Jobs’s approach to work generated enemies. His erratic approach to work and dedication were major sources of project conflict in building and launching new products.

Looking back on his early years and return to Apple, Jobs’s excitement for technology changed the world. Apple computers have rightly earned recognition for excellence. The company’s reputation for outstanding design is one of his lasting legacies. In 2015, the newly released Apple Watch has won the 2015 iF Design Awards.

7 Trendiest Men’s Hairstyles

Trendiest Hairstyle

When you look back at pictures of yourself, your first inclination is to look at your face, and it is not so much your facial expression that distracts you (well most of the time), but the masterpiece framing it. Your hair, believe it or not, says a lot about who you are or at least who you want to portray yourself to be.

With the help of this infographic of the trendiest hairstyles for men, you can decide which hairstyle works best for you. Remember, the style you choose is an important step in branding yourself. Within the first few seconds of meeting someone, an individual makes their initial assessment (whether you care or not).

This infographic uniquely paints the picture of the trendiest hairstyles, whether you are a samurai warrior or a classic businessman type.

Let’s start with the undercut. This is a style for all hair types and is easy to style. It recognizes that you are on point with the trends, and savvy enough to modify it for your face shape, texture, and needs.

The man bun and its counterpart, the top knot, on the other hand, are not for the faint of heart as they are the trendiest and most daring of all. These styles are hard to pull off and look best on those with rugged masculinity and natural wavy or curly tresses.

The fade is best for the guy with no time for sprays and hair wax, or someone who is worried about thinning hair. He sticks to his comfort zone while looking fresh and put together.

Meanwhile, for that classy confident business minded man, stick with the side part and comb, as this hairstyle is timeless.

Lastly, the pompadour and the short back and sides hairstyles, are for the higher maintenance men who take pride in spending some serious time slicking their hair into the perfect coif. These guys are creative, fun and unique with thier twist on class.

Whether you’re the rugged masculine samurai or the classic side parting business man, with today’s trends, you are sure to find the perfect style for you.

15 Must-Have Items For Men To Look Fresh And Professional

photodune-3549754-businessman-in-new-york-m

The times of white collars are long gone, and professional men are now more dapper than ever. A successful man is always a noticeable one, and what he chooses to wear reflects his esteem, accomplishments and diligence. A big shot or not, a modern man is ever hungry for his professional goals, and not a lot of things can stand in his way towards achieving them. Such a man is presentable and memorable, and with a little help from his wardrobe, stylish and upscale. From head to toe, his appearance reveals his position and determination.

What we wear doesn’t define who we are, people often say this, but nobody can deny that a road to success starts with a sleek suit (and usually finishes with a fancy watch). Being well groomed is, therefore, important for acing the job interview, closing a business deal and conciliating new clients and partners. Also, it’s easy and fun and it doesn’t always have to be expensive. Here’s what you need to look modern, fresh and professional.

1. Dark Two-Piece Suit

photo-3

Let’s start with the basics. A traditional two piece suit in darker tones is a necessity in every working man’s closet. Whether it’s black, navy blue or dark grey, shiny or matt, a suite is the foundation of a professional look. Since a dark suit can be paired with pretty much everything, you should establish it as your go-to item. But just because a dark suit is a safe choice, that doesn’t mean you can’t play with it when you feel a bit bolder. For a little pop of color, complement it with a vibrant pocket square or a patterned tie. And, if you’re not afraid of making strong fashion statements, wear it with a chic turtleneck.

Dress sharply with Nordstrom, Armani Exchange or Calvin Klein, but be prepared to pay a price that goes from $500 to over a $1000. Low-cost suits that still look like a million bucks can be found with Topman, J. Crew, DKNY and Banana Republic. If on sale, they can even cost under $100.

2. Light Two-Piece Suit

light suit

For a gentleman that finds pleasure in being daring and dandy, a light suit is absolutely essential. It brings variety and shows attitude. Dove-grey, pale blue or chino variant is brilliant for sunbathed days, and you’ll certainly get noticed wearing one. A traditional business pinstriped suit can also be freshened up with brighter colors like tan and white. Since this suit is the heart of your outfit, complete it with nothing more than a white shirt and a black or a grey tie. If you choose to go chino, your choice of shirt can be a bit darker, or even gingham.

Once again, you can find your perfectly tailored suit at Dolce and Gabbana, Jil Sander and Michael Bastian at higher price (around $1000), or turn to equally stylish, yet inexpensive designers like DKNY, Perry Ellis and Claiborne for prices around $200.

3. White Button-Down Shirt

mens-loafers-12

Exactly like the dark two-piece suit, a crisp white button-down shirt is a fashion must-have for every classy man. Besides being wordperfect with any type of a suit, a white shirt can unmistakably contribute to the more casual looks. You can wear it with a pair of jeans, combined with an accentuated belt. For a statement piece, you should consider suspenders or a bow tie. Also, a plain white shirt is trim and elegant when coordinated with a V-neck sweater.

In addition to being amazing and practical, a white shirt is incredibly easy to buy. Gap, Eddie Bauer and Guess? offer their shirts with a price that goes around $50, which is just the right amount of money for a quality bargain.

4. Colored Button-Down Shirt

comment_1Ev8jXf5OJA97MLNr0pmkUlDqazFLyaz,wat

When we propose a colored shirt, it doesn’t include just solid tints, but also patterns and multicolored pieces. Solids can basically be of any color, from pale blues to vibrant oranges. Pairing them with a dark suit is not a big challenge, and it surely makes the look a lot more creative. When it comes to patterns, nothing is more exciting than madras, but polka dots and gingham are equally playful. Color blocking is a huge trend that men can best incorporate in their daily outfits through shirts. An amazing, sharp way of wearing a colored button-down shirt is underneath a waistcoat, with a complementary tie.

Colored shirts are usually the same price as plain whites, and designers like Benetton, Sisley and J.Crew charge around $40 for them. Stunning, well-priced pieces can be found at Club Monaco and Armani Exchange for about $80.

5. Tweed Jacket

img_9139_original-800-600

For breezy autumn days, choose tweed. It’s offbeat, European, and a bit eccentric. Tweed suggests different shades of yarn incorporated into the weaving, and therefore can be paired with pants of the same color as one of the minor shades the fabric offers. The most popular choice of tweed blazers are glen-plaid, broken-check, and district-check, and all of them are great with brogue boots and messenger bags. Pick a dark gingham shirt or one of bright solid color for the authentic history professor look.

Herringbone or tartan, you can get a hold of your tweed jacket at various prices. At Asos, J. Crew and Marc Darcy, their average cost is $150 while Brooks Brothers, Hardwick, Aubin and Wills and A. P. C. will charge for them around $500.

6. Waistcoat

Being one of the most versatile pieces of clothing, it’s a pure wonder that men often forget about a waistcoat. As a third piece of a black-tie suit, this dandy item is a privilege of every successful gentleman. However, a waistcoat can also be worn with style in a more casual manner, teamed with tan pants and black loafers, dark jeans and suede boots or formal pants and a tweed jacket. Whichever you choose, a waistcoat is just the right touch of bohemian every flamboyant man needs.

For a swanky piece of clothing that it is, a waistcoat is not very expensive. The most affordable pieces are at Asos, for under $50. Mid-priced brands are Topman, River Island and Reiss, and their price range goes from $70 to $150. Since a waistcoat is not something you are going to wear often, you can indulge yourself with a really extravagant one at Ted Baker for $250.

7. Dark Jeans

dd415216375545fafca2e58d196e4357

Getting to wear your favorite pair of jeans is the best part of every casual Friday. You can always complement them with dress shoes, but you can also insist on being relaxed all the way through with leather laced-up boots. The choices of shirts that go with dark jeans are endless, and can be tucked in and finished with a wide leather belt, or let to hang loosely over. Whether you round it up with a blazer or a sweater, a pattern or a pop of color, with jeans you can’t go wrong.

With some luck, fellas can find the perfect type of jeans at Nordstrom and Lucky Brand for under $100. Mavi, 4 Stroke, J Brand, Acne and Raven jeans costs go in range of 150 to $200.

8. Trench Coat

12333

Speaking in a subtle and polished way, the Burberry trench coat is just what you need to stay handsome and trim in poor weather. This luxury fashion house made it iconic, but you can always try other designers that suit you well. Choose beige, black or navy blue as essentials, or be prominent with deep reds and greens. Apart from perfect shoes, you’ll need a luxurious scarf to complete your trench coat, a Humphrey Bogart hat to stay within a theme and an umbrella to round it all up.

When it comes to this evergreen piece, retailers like Topman and Zara hold charge for them under $150. Others, like Reiss, Agnes B, Paul Smith and Acne value their quality from $200 to $800. The celebrated Burberry approximately costs $1500.

9. Black Leather Shoes

93f8d140a70b8115c9c8c3c06c935877

When you go shopping for fashion essentials, the first thing you’ll need to be looking for are shoes. Black lace-ups are the key piece of any professional style, and the best of them are the oxfords. Keep their contour slim, and toe rounded, never square. They are downright with suits and jeans both, and can deliver in any occasion. For a little twist, you can try black penny loafers as well. Match your favorite pair with socks of a conservative or more flashy fashion (stripes and other patterns are not only acceptable, but dashing as well), or you can show some ankle with loafer socks.

Affordable brands of this requisite fashion item are Clarks, ASOS, Ted Baker, Dune and Topman (under $100) and you can find your luxury pieces at Church’s, John Lobb, Crockett & Jones, George Cleverley, Mr Hare, Berluti, Edward Green, Tod’s, Oliver Sweeney, J.Crew, Suitsupply and Paul Smith for about $500.

10. Brown Leather Shoes

d3dc5-4-2

Chocolate and chestnut dress shoes can do much more for your outfit than traditional blacks. Sophisticated and a bit dandy, they can still be pulled off with smart business suits and other formal wear. These hues are allowed with black suits also, but pair them cleverly with accessories of the same tint. They are exquisite when teamed with khaki pants, a white shirt with sleeves rolled up and a cockscomb panama hat. Being brighter, brown shoes demand more attention, and well-polished shoes are a hallmark of every slick gent.

For lower costs of brown leather shoes, turn to ALDO, ASOS, Ask The Missus, Ted Baker, Dune and KG by Kurt Geiger, where their price is around $200. Higher priced shoes can be found at Church’s, Grenson, Oliver Sweeney, Cheaney, Loake, Barker, Crockett & Jones, John Lobb, Tricker’s, Mr Hare and O’Keeffe,

11. Tie

122222

A tie has crossed a long way from an obligatory piece of bureaucratic formal wear to a strong statement item every elegant man can take a lot of pride in. The ways of mixing and matching this timeless accessory to the rest of your clothes are unlimited, and they both complete formal and casual dress codes. Also, pay attention to the style of your collar, since not every shape complements every tie. Explore what lengths and widths go with which types of blazers. You can play safe with solid ties on patterned shirts or vice versa, or be distinctive with different pattern-on pattern combos. Experiment with different types of knots, from classic balthus to swank eldredge, and include a tie pin for prim look.

Unfortunately for gents, ties are a bit more expensive for a piece that needs to be changed quite often. The price range of designer ties goes from $200 to $300 at Charvet, Jay Kos, Ralph Lauren and Hermes. Paul Smith offers them for around $100, and the costs at J. Press go even lower.

12. Bag

galla-dark-blue-jacket

According to its nature of work, every profession requires a functional bag. Still, its usefulness doesn’t have to hide your sense of style. Briefcases are no longer out of date, since new generation of designers offers sleekness and versatility. Cross body messenger bags and vintage satchels can give you a less stern look, and provide needed space for your computer and papers. A leather folio is impeccable with a business suit, and practical for a tablet and necessities. When out of office, you’ll need a perfect duffle bag to carry all of your gentleman’s indispensables in. Also, for those confident enough, men bags and totes are masculine as they are practical.

Depending on their styles, sizes and material, bags can be found at prices for every budget. The most inexpensive briefcases are at H&M and B. R. Edward ($150), Visconti ($200), Reiss ($250) and Jack Spade, Michael Kors and Rag and Bone (over $300). Ernest Alexander, Asos and River Island craft amazing quality messenger bags and satchels for under $100. At Fossil, Ted Baker and J. Crew these bags cost between $150 & and $300. Duffle bags are somewhat more affordable, and Asos and River Island value theirs from $50 to $150, the same amount of money you would spend here for quality crafted totes.

13. Leather Belt

timthumb

If your choice of clothes is safe, something as simple as a leather belt can draw attention to your look. When picking the right one to go with your business suit, you should keep in mind that smart wear usually demands basic colors, like black, brown and tan. Also, the belt should match your shoes in color and hue, and in type of leather, if possible. The shinier the belt, the better. Keep the buckle minimalist and polished. For a more casual look, a belt can be wider or thinner than the formal one, and can even contrast the color of the rest of the outfit.

The prices of leather belts vary from $100 (Dsquared) to $600 (Alexander Mcqueen, Fendi and Dolce and Gabbana). In between are Burberry, Salvatore Ferragamo, Lanvin, Saint Laurent and Armani.

14. Leather Wallet

733c1e95cbf39bfe314cfd162c17c6f0

Nothing better to accentuate your professional liability then your wallet. Once again, traditional colors are black, tan and brown, but this practical accessory permits other tints as well. The main thing about a wallet is its functionality, so choose a billfold with a lot of compartments for your business cards, credit cards and ID. The elegant way to go is with personalized engravings in the skin of the wallet, or over the top with snakeskin design.

This inexpensive, but much needed accessory can be purchased at pretty inexpensive prices. Merona, Kenneth Cole, Maxx & Unicorn, Corter and Chester Mox give you high quality and impeccable design for under $100.

15. Watch

e57132afe8268706e7662b7b261b327e

Now that you have succeeded, it’s about time to reward yourself with a superb watch. There aren’t much rules when it comes to detailing your outfit with a wristwatch. Basically, the only thing this gear should match is your personality. You can choose minimalistic and simple styles, vintage or royal, yellow gold with brown leather bracelet or chrome black with complementary steel and a ceramic bracelet. A watch is the most refined and delicate accessory in a grown man’s closet, and you wouldn’t want to pass on the best one for your personal esthetics.

The watch shopping is certainly a time to go big – from Longines ($3000) to Chopard ($20000) – but if you are still determined in finding your piece for under $1000, try at Michael Kors, Marc Jacobs, Guess, Seiko and Breytenbach.

Top 5 Websites To Sell Your Old iPhone For the Most Money

10575983013_f76560dca6_k

Whether you want to sell your old iPhone, or buy a used iPhone to save money instead of buying one that is brand new, you will need to shop around until you find the sites that offer the best deals. After all, if you are selling, you want to get the most money possible, and if you are buying, you want to get the best savings. Here are the top five websites where you can sell and buy older iPhones and make or save money.

1. Craigslist

cl

You can buy and sell old iPhones for anywhere from $70 to $800, depending on the age and condition of the phone. The only problem with Craigslist is that you need to be careful about who you are dealing with, because no one is screened. Completing the deal in a public place is always recommended for your safety. Craigslist is free and easy to use. All you have to do is post your ad with all of the pertinent information (including contact information) and photos of the item. You can get great deals if you are looking to buy an older phone, and you can often get top dollar when you are selling an iPhone.

2. Sell My iPhone

sell iphone

Sell your old iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5 or iPhone 5C quickly and easily at this website. You will receive accurate quotes, and after the phone is delivered to Gadget Salvation, you will receive payment within a day or two. Simply send in the phone (for free), and an inspection will be performed. Within 48 hours, you will receive confirmation about the sale, and the payment will be issued.

3. Amazon

amazon

One of the best options is the Trade-In program from Amazon. No matter what the age of your iPhone is, you are going to make some money. All you have to do is a short Q&A on the type of phone you have, your carrier (if you have one), the condition, and if there are any accessories included. Then, you will get a flat rate from Amazon in the form of an Amazon gift card. It doesn’t get much simpler than that, and you can redeem the gift card for other items, including putting it toward a new iPhone. Another option is to act as an individual seller, but there is a bit more work involved because you will need to set up an account. But, you can choose your own selling price. When the item sells, you will have the money in your account within two to three weeks.

4. Best Buy

best buy

Earn anywhere from $5 to $310 for your old iPhone (depending on the model, condition, and accessories included) when you sell it to Best Buy. You can go online and get an estimate for what the company will pay for your iPhone. Then, simply print out the estimate and take it to a participating store in your area. You will receive a Best Buy gift certificate, which you can use towards the purchase of a new iPhone. Keep in mind that they do not take original iPhones.

5. Walmart

walmart

You can earn pretty much the same here as you can from Best Buy when you sell your old iPhone, and you can get great deals on newer models. Go online to get a quote for the device (you will need to let them know what condition it is in). Then, mail the phone in and receive a Walmart gift card for up to $300, depending on the phone and its condition. Models as old as the iPhone 3GS are being accepted (these only go for $5.50, but it’s better than nothing).

15 Things Only Loved Ones Of Alzheimer’s Patients Would Understand

Black and white portrait of an elderly woman kissing her husband's cheek

Alzheimer’s is a physical ailment that damages the brain cells, leading to dementia. The decaying of brain cells causes severe memory loss, as well as reduced thinking skills and emotional capacity. The disease was first discovered by Dr. Alois Alzheimer, a German psychiatrist and neuropathologist, in 1906. Dr. Alzheimer noticed changes in the brain cells of a woman who died out of a peculiar mental illness. She suffered from memory loss, speech decay, and erratic behaviour. Upon her death, Dr. Alzheimer investigated her brain and discovered many abnormal clumps (they are now known as amyloid plaques) and tangled bundles of fiber (now known as neurofibrillary tangles). Therefore, it was concluded that plaques and tangles (the result of protein buildup in the brain) are the main two reasons for Alzheimer’s disease. Loss of connections among nerve cells in the brain is another contributing factor.

Alzheimer’s disease usually begins around the age of 65. This estimation varies, naturally. But experts say that 5 million Americans suffer from this disease by the time they are 65 or older. Of course, there are treatments for this illness. As these treatments have become more advanced over time, doctors have been injecting the missing chemicals into the brains, helping them to receive some signals. Alzheimer’s starts gradually, eventually interfering with daily life. Patients end up totally dependent on another person, unable to do even the simplest of work.

It is the patients’ loved ones who most understand the difficulties that Alzheimer’s patients face. This article is dedicated to those beautiful souls who undertake the full time job of taking care of these patients with utmost love. Here are 15 things only these loved ones would understand:

1. You know that the person is more than a disease.

Your loved one can be your father, or mother, or your partner. Regardless of the relationship you have to that person, you always know that the person means the world to you. This is the person, who at one time loved you and took care of you just like you are doing now. This person is who you have known all your life, even though they will never function like they used to.

2. You use every process of communication to reach your loved one.

Your loved one has memory loss, no way to express emotions, or perhaps even worse, your loved one fails to recognize you. It doesn’t mean you stop taking care of him or her. You try your best to communicate with them through different mediums of connection. It can be music, reading books, watching television shows, or talking about daily occurrences. Even a simple touch on the arm can give them the message that they are loved.

3. You cannot argue with your loved one.

With the loss of behavioral abilities, a patient is left with little reasoning ability. They may react aggressively at times. You know there is no point in arguing with your loved one. Rather, arguments would lead to more upsetting situations and would frustrate both parties. It is better just to agree with the things they say.

4. You know your person is not changing, but the disease is.

It is extremely hard to see the gradual change the person is going through right in front of your eyes. The struggles in language, the lack of communication, the changes in mood, the shift in personality, and all other negative factors come from the disease. It is not the patient’s fault. Your loved one is the same person, even though he or she cannot control the situation anymore.

5. You have to be educated about this disease.

I have tried my best to summarize the term Alzheimer’s. But it is more than that. Researchers have been studying this disease for years. Here is a website where you can go and study it more in detail. Becoming more educated about the disease will help you to better understand the person you are taking care of.

6. You must give them independence when possible.

If your loved one is in a more mild stage, you should give them some independence to do their own work. They should at least try to do some activities in order to stay active. In these ways, your loved ones can stimulate their brains to carry messages as much as possible. Of course, they will eventually stop being able to accomplish such tasks once they reach the moderate to severe stages. Until then, encourage them to do things like count money, keep a diary, or talk about things they are fond of or remember well.

7. You should develop set routines and schedules.

As the illness develops further, it becomes very hard for you and your loved one to keep track of daily routines. Just like nursing a baby, you should have a set rhythm with them. Remember, this person is like a child to you. Keeping a daily routine and schedule will make life much easier. This can help to eliminate confusion and frustration for your loved one.

8. You have to continue with good nutrition.

Your loved ones need a proper, balanced diet. Studies have shown that a lack of healthy food can contribute to worsening Alzheimer’s. It is recommended that a patient cut down on refined sugar and increase intake of fruits and vegetables to help better manage the disease.

9. You should plan time for physical exercise.

Did you know that physical exercise is extremely beneficial for your loved one? Their bodies need to stay healthy just like yours does. Regardless of the stage they are in (it is better if they start from an early stage, since the habits will build as time progresses), you can accompany them on daily walks, gardening, or even dancing!

10. You should maintain the current list of medications.

You should take your loved one to regular check-ups. The doctors will fix the medications according to the stage that they are in. It is very important to maintain the list of current medicines. You should take extra caution to see to it that they don’t miss a single dose.

11. You cannot forget that your loved one has emotions too.

Yes, they may forget you, they may get angry at you, or they may ignore you for days, but they do have emotions. Your actions and words can have a great impact on them. One of my uncles suffers from Alzheimer’s. He cannot remember anyone, not even his children! But sometimes, he would smile at them, or laugh with them. Check out this article and see for yourself why emotions matter!

12. You have to be realistic in your expectations.

Whether it is your expectations for yourself or for your loved ones, you have to be realistic. This is very significant because setting practical goals will make you expect the unexpected. In this way, you won’t feel disappointed as you see your loved one struggle with this disease.

13. You should have fun with your loved one!

Just because your loved one is suffering from a horrible disease doesn’t mean that they cannot have fun. Plan a trip to the zoo, or to the nearest park, and take your family members with you as well. Take plenty of photos, and bear in mind that even though your loved one may not show emotions, they still certainly enjoyed your company!

14. You should ALWAYS remember that Alzheimer’s detection is NOT a death sentence!

It is not the end of the world. No, a patient of Alzheimer’s can live for twenty or more years with the disease. Utilize whatever time you have at hand and make the most out of it. Don’t leave a hollow space that will leave you with regrets.

15. You must love your loved ones as they are now.

You should not try to change them, because they will never go back to their old selves. You should embrace them as they are, in their current situations, with their current behaviours, their frequent mood swings, and everything that is related to them. In other words, love them as they are right now!

You should not perceive your loved ones as burdens, because they are not! There will be total life changing experiences for you as you struggle to cope with your new role. You will get upset and emotionally challenged at times, but always remember that this is a person who has loved you very much. Respect them, love them, and live with them.

Star Floor

Do you want to have this magical looking star floor? Follow these steps to make your bathroom floor look amazing!

Step 1: Make a plan

Gather all the supplies you need. Fibers, light source, scissors and everything to tile a floor.

Then, before you start, you need to plan where you want the light source to be, since all the fibers have to run to this point. The light source should be placed outside the room, since this is safer. Once you know where you are starting from, you can start running the fibers.

Step 2: Bundle and place your fibers

First you need to decide how many fibers per square meter you want. Than create your bundles, making each strand longer than the path it has to go. Cut the fibers about 30cm longer. Tie or tape the bundle tightly, near the point of the light source.

step 2

The first tile you will need to lay is the one closest to the light source. Start laying your tiles, spreading the fibers underneath. To keep the height of the tiles even, spread the fibers towards the direction they will be placed. Make sure to be careful with the starting point, since the first tile will have all the fibers underneath and won’t have much floor to stick to. You can spread them slightly to the side, to make it easier.

Step 3: Tiling

step 3

To tile the rest of the floor, start with holding up all the fibers. Only let the ones that have to go the way you’re going down. Make sure your tiles have plenty of adhesive to stick to. After doing this, you can put the tile down.

step 3b

Fibers are delicate, make sure to give them a little space if you leave them up. You can leave them up by sticking them to the tile with tape. The further you go, the less fibers are under you tiles.

Step 4: Grout and make stars

step 4

Where there are no fibers, you can grout as normal. Around the fibers, be careful. The first time it will leave small holes. After doing all the holes, you can do it a second time.

Now it is time to cut the fibers. They need to be at tile level. Use a hot knife to cut them the right length. After cutting, you can fill up the holes in the grout.

Step 5: Finish!

And now, the floor is done! It took some work, but you can now light up the stars!

10 Milestones No Parent Should Miss

10 Milestones No Parent Should Miss

Milestones. Some big, some small. All important.

Milestones are big parts of our life which have have a substantial effect on, or are big steps in our progress as a person. Below is ten milestones which parents should not miss!

1. First Steps

The day your child takes their first steps is miraculous. That momentous event that only happens once but is forever ingrained into your memory. When they get up and take one slow step at a time while you try to contain an insurmountable feeling of pride – after all, your child is walking! This is something which they will do for the rest of their life. One, if not the most basic action they can do but an action what is limitless.

2. First Words

It could be “Mummy” or “Daddy” or something completely strange! Either way, your child’s first words are a tear-summoning thing. To hear their own, independent voice. The feeling that they will go great places and that words will help them there. First words can be something to laugh about at an 18th birthday party or something to sit back and smile about when you’re down. Thinking back to those first words are a way to summon great happiness and comfort. You know that they might one day anger you but you also know deep down that whatever they say, it is something special as their voice is from you. This isn’t a moment to miss!

3. First Birthday

Every birthday is special but today they have been with you for one year. It’s been a quick year too! Through all the crying and diaper-changing, you have managed to pull through for the first year! It’s all up hill from here right? It’s a celebration for them but also for you. You have cared for this complex but beautiful being in front of you for a whole year. All the presents they have got, you know they don’t fully understand what it’s for but you can tell they have enjoyed the attention. Their first birthday is such a special moment in your shared development.

4. First Day Of School

If I remember correctly, on my first day of school, I cried about whether or not my jumper was alright.

The first day of school is a massive thing. It begins the start of a very long and eventful journey. School trips, tests and success: whatever your child does, school has created some success in them. On the video of me getting ready for the first time, I was so excited and didn’t even know how to put on the pair of trousers I had (my dad came and helped me put them on). No matter how old they are, if you capture this moment, it will always put a smile on your faces. There’s something about this occasion that is very special. It hits you that they are actually growing up and you can’t do anything about it.

5. Prom

You stand there, smiling as you take the picture. Your little one suddenly looks so much older. The memory of the time you spent on the beach when they were only a year old flashes in front of your eyes. He turns and poses with his date. You can imagine that in 10 or 20 years, he might be getting married. It hits you and you feel a twist in your gut. Prom is the day when your little one shows you how mature they are. Either in that smart suit, looking like a gentleman or wearing that dress and necklace you got her for her birthday. Prom is a very special occasion, don’t miss it or you might miss them growing up.

6. Leaving home

This gut-wrenching moment is the day you realize that your child isn’t yours any more. They are their own person. No matter how many times you tell yourself it won’t happen, it comes to the day when you wake up and immediately feel heart-broken.

The day they leave.

Every time you walk past their old room a little bit of you screams inside. Although it may be a tough milestone to go through, don’t miss it – even if it’s just for them. They will be ecstatic at the idea of living alone and will want to share that with you.

7. Graduation

The day your now not-so little one graduates is a massive thing in their life. It opens the door to so many new opportunities. Whether a great job, new experiences or even meeting new people. Graduation signifies the end to a very long era of your child’s life. No more education and into employment with their shiny, new qualifications! Lots of tears will be shared at graduation but it is a wonderful thing to watch. Seeing your child shake hands and succeed. Going back to their friends with a grin on their face!

8. First House

“Knock, Knock, Knock”

Something seems strange about this. Asking to be let into a house; but not any house – your child’s. It seems so strange but as they open the doors with a big, welcoming smile on their face everything seems natural. They seem so comfortable in this environment – as if they’ve lived there all their life. It’s not something to just shrug off as a small moment in their life. This symbolizes the start of their independence in the world, completely self-sufficient from now on. A scary thought but it gives you a warm feeling inside, knowing you’ve succeeded.

9. Marriage

The music plays as everyone turns around. The bride walks slowly but with purpose. While the groom stands, a tear in his eye. These two people seem so strange to you, you don’t know them, surely? But you seem to recognize one of them? It’s your child. The person who you used to bath and tuck into bed. The little voice who would say “I love you” as you turn off the light. You remember all their birthdays; the look of amazement and excitement as they want to rip into their presents. Now you’re stood here, watching them in awe. They seem so full of purpose and calm, so different from the little baby that cried in it’s cot all night. Marriage is an incredibly important moment in your child’s life. They have found someone they are happy with, someone who they care about and want to spend the rest of their life with.

10. Birth of your grandchild

The birth of your grandchild is such an amazing idea. The life you brought into the world is now in your shoes, looking down at a wide-eyed baby which they pledge to bring up in the world with love and care. You get into the hospital at 3 o’clock in the morning and you run to where your new grandchild is. As you walk into the room you have to stifle a gasp as you see them. Seeing your grandchild for the first time is like seeing your child for the time. It plucks at your heartstrings and plays a beautiful serenade. A moment that will stay with you all your life. You see yourself in your child as they look into their child’s eyes.

10 Things You Can Do To Make The Most of Your Morning

coffee-690349_1280

The morning should be a productive time, joyous and an important part of the day to make you become a better person. The morning is a vital part of the day. To make your mornings more inspiring and worthwhile, perhaps you have to consider some things you need to do to get the best out of it.

1.Start early

To get the best out of your mornings, it is best to start early. This means making the most of your previous evening and going to bed early. Resting well offers you more energy, productivity and clarity. You are also less stressed and less irritable.

2. Know and practice what triggers your most creative state

You cannot get the most out of your mornings if you really are not familiar with yourself. You have to know what makes your morning rituals easier to accomplish. This could mean what time you need to wake up and what position will set your creativity into motion.

Do you need to set your alarm clock or turn it off? Or do you need to set your easel, I-pod or running clothes next to your bed, or is it simply listening to a particular song? Find what will get your day in a perfect mode.

3. Imagine the perfect morning

Many people may not know this, but imagining how perfect your morning will be like tends to excite your senses and offers you the intensity to reach your goals for the morning.

So have a clear picture of how you want your morning to be like. Will you spend it having a hearty meal, taking a jog, reading a book, engaging with other family members or having a period of solitude?

4. Exercise

According to studies, people who engage in regular exercise are calmer, happier and better equipped to deal with the stress or anything the day throws at them. Integrating an exercise into your morning will boost your productivity and get you in the right mood for the day. It doesn’t have to be an intense physical activity, perhaps biking or taking a walk around your neighborhood or taking some yoga will be what you need to get your day going in the right direction.

5. Get through a plan

Have a morning schedule that is well mapped out to help you direct your energy positively. Have a detailed plan that has a time frame for getting your important morning tasks accomplished.

6. Prioritize

It is better not to crowd your morning with so many activities, but rather stock it with what is most important. This means prioritizing, and most times the arduous tasks may be what get your creativity going. Many successful people call this eating the frog first.

7. Manage your energy and time

Most times it is not simply about managing your time but managing your energy as well. Track what you do with your time and energy in the mornings. Make sure you are getting a return for the use of your time and energy. If what is unnecessary seems to envelope you and leaves you fatigue before the day begins, try rescheduling it for a latter part of the day.

 8. Eat right

Make sure you have a decent meal in the morning. This could mean eating healthy and avoiding fatty meals that would quickly burn out and set you up for a fatigued day. So eat right; try eating a diet consisting of proteins, carbs and fiber. Eat enough and make sure your food sets you up for the perfect day.

9. Dress well

Dressing right keeps you in a positive state to meet your day. It adds to your self-esteem and builds your confidence along the way.

10. Build a habit

Make sure what applies successfully for you should be repeated daily. It takes effort to build a habit and stay consistent with it. Yet the effort is worth it if you can keep up with it.
